Why area alone gets it wrong
Dividing the total area of your parts by 32 sq ft gives a number that is almost always too low. Parts cannot be split across sheets, each cut removes about 1/8 in of material, factory edges often need trimming, and grain-locked parts cannot rotate to fill gaps. A real layout answers the question; area only gives a floor.
| Method | Result |
|---|---|
| Area: 30 sq ft ÷ 32 sq ft | 1 sheet |
| Real layout: two 24 in rows plus one kerf need 48 1/8 in | 2 sheets |
How to get the number
- Under Parts, enter each part: quantity, length and width.
- Under Sheets, enter the sheet size (96 × 48 in) and leave the quantity blank.
- Set the blade kerf and trim in Cutting settings.
- Read the Sheets total at the top of the plan, with the yield of each sheet.
Buy one extra sheet when a mistake would stop the job, or when the yield of the last sheet is very high and leaves no margin.
Questions
How many square feet is a sheet of plywood?
A 4×8 ft sheet is 32 sq ft (2.97 m²). Metric 2440 × 1220 mm sheets are the same size.
Should I add extra for waste?
The layout already includes kerf and trim. Add a spare sheet only for defects or mistakes.
Can I mix sheet sizes or use offcuts?
Yes. Add each size, with a quantity for the ones you already have, and leave the new sheets blank.
